Building a Taste of Home
In case you haven’t heard of it, you should know that Voodoo is not your typical shop or supermarket. What makes this place so special is that it combines an African grocery store, beauty shop, and hair salon all under one roof. Specializing in African haircare, customers can find all sorts of products, get a haircut, braids, or other hairstyles, and enjoy hair treatments all in the same space. And after all that, they can even do their groceries before leaving the store.
The previous owner opened the business driven by her love for African culture and the need for a place in Leuven that sold specific haircare products for her children, who are originally from Rwanda. That unique concept has remained at the heart of Voodoo ever since, and Abody is determined to preserve it. Now, the shop also offers some Haitian products, reflecting Abody’s own roots. Although she has lived in Leuven for many years, Haiti remains a very important part of who she is. “It’s such a beautiful country. I live in Belgium, but my heart is always in Haiti.”
Authentic Flavors and Ingredients
From fresh produce, oils, herbs, meat and fish, and drinks, to hair and skincare products, Voodoo offers a wide range of products connected to African and Caribbean cultures. When asked which ingredient reminds her most of home, there’s no hesitation from Abody: djondjon. That is the name of a particular type of black mushroom used in Haitian cuisine, often considered a delicacy. “It’s difficult to find them here,” she explains, “and if you do, it won’t be cheap.”
Many people also wonder about the name of the store, ‘Voodoo’. Abody wants to set the record straight: “It is a religion. Sometimes people get scared because they associate the word with witchcraft, but we don’t do voodoo here. It actually carries a lot of cultural value.”
Sharing Culture Through Food
Abody has been in Leuven for many years. “I came here when I was 19.” What she loves most about the city is its multiculturality and the fact that students from all over the world come here. After so long, it is clear she feels at home in Leuven, where she also says she feels very safe.
As for what excites customers most, Abody says it is often the concept of the store itself. Nobody realizes how convenient it is to have a hair salon and a grocery store in the same space until visiting Voodoo! Over the years, the business has become a true landmark in Leuven, creating a space where food, beauty, and culture come together under one roof.
