Practicalities when Moving Out

Leaving your rental property

Inform your landlord you are moving

  • Please be aware you need to send a letter to your landlord to inform them you are leaving. Make sure to keep record of this letter and the date it was sent. DO NOT make this notice by hone call, you need a record of this notice. Best to do it by registered post o email.
  • Is there a penalty for early departure? If you are leaving before the end of your contract you might have to pay an early departure fee.

Exit survey

  • Find your entry survey and have it handy for the exit survey
  • If there are any damages that were not mentioned in the entry survey then you will be responsible for paying those damages

Cleaning

Make sure to have a clear understanding of who is responsible for the cleaning? Your landlord will likely want you to return the rental property how you found it, which is normally clean.

Contact a cleaning company if needed and determine the costs.

House maintenance

Contract Terminations

Make sure to terminate the necessary contracts

  • Gas
  • Electricity
  • Water
  • Internet
  • Alarm system
  • Heating oil
  • Other

    Miscellaneous

  • Return all keys to the landlord/agent
  • Obtain a parking permit for moving van (usual done by a moving company if you use one)
  • Sell or donate remianing furniture/appliances (to give away contact the Krigwinkel)
  • Empty fridge/freezer

Potential costs when leaving a rental property

  • Exit survey
  • Cleaning
  • Penalty for early departure

Ending necessary accounts at banks and insurances, etc.

Determine whether you need to close the following accounts but make sure to settle your bills first:

  • Bank account (make sure you won't need it again for salaries, taxes, etc.)
  • Phone/data
  • Health insurance fund
  • Fire insurance
  • Car Insurance

De-registration/Government

  • Settle your Belgian taxes, you might need to fill out a tax return. You need to specifically inform the tax office you are moving and request a special tax form (ONLY if you are moving abroad)
  • De-register from your commune (Model 8)
  • Return or exchange back your driver's license
  • Return Belgian license plates
  • Arrange post forwarding with DoMyMove at Bpost
