For many internationals in Leuven, understanding and integrating in the biking culture of Flanders can be big feat. Who has right of way, what do all the signs mean, where am I allowed to park, and most of all how do I maintain my bike? With these 2 workshops we hope to answer all your questions about how to safely bike in Leuven and the do's and don'ts of biking in you daily life.
We will welcome some instructors from the biking school in Leuven to give these 2 workshops. These workshops will contribute to:
- Greater self-confidence and insight into one’s own cycling skills.
- Fewer accidents and absences: Defensive cycling effectively reduces the risk of bicycle accidents and, thereby, results in fewer absences due to injury or illness.
- More sustainable mobility: A safe cycling experience lowers the barrier to more frequent bicycle use. This is good for human health and the environment.
Workshop 1: Biking Safely (theory)
More and more people are choosing bicycles as their mode of transportation for daily trips in Leuven. That’s fantastic, but it also brings new challenges: more (and more diverse) cyclists unfortunately also means a higher risk of accidents. Defensive cycling reduces those risks.
Defensive cycling means reading traffic, recognizing hazards in time, and adapting your riding behavior intelligently. This
ensures greater safety and confidence in traffic.
In this hour and half theoretical workshop, participants discover how to avoid major risks and gain insights into their bicycle,
cycling behavior, and risk perception.
Max number of participants: 30
Date and time: June 9 - 18:30-20:30
Location: International House Leuven - Tiensevest 60
After this session you will have the chance to purchase the theory information packet from the biking school, this includes the link to the videos explaining the traffic rules. Participants can pay a symbolic contribution of €10 (via QR code), which is directly invested in teaching people in vulnerable situations how to ride a bike.
Workshop 2: Do's and Don'ts of Biking in Leuven (practical)
This traffic safety bike tour teaches the most important do's and don’ts for new cyclists in Leuven, such as practical application of traffic laws, familiarization with bike parking rules and other cycling facilities, introduction to safe and pleasant cycling routes,…
During this 2 hours workshop you will need:
- a bike (if you don't have a bike to bring you can rent one from the biking school for 8€/bike, please note that you need to add a bike onto your ticket if needed, but you will pay for the bike rental at the event)
- a helmet (available at the bike school if needed)
- a safety vest (available at the bike school)
Max number of participants: 20
Date and time: June 23 - 18:30-21:00
