2025 Community Survey Press Release (English)

Published in Leuven, on 30 September 2025

Leuven is evolving into a leading international reference point for for cities welcoming knowledge workers. This is evident from the new study "Lost in Leuven or Loving it? 2025" by International House Leuven (IHL), the central point of contact that offers internationals practical support, activities, and a community. The research confirms that Leuven not only attracts international talent but also helps them feel at home here.

The survey of 781 knowledge workers and new residents from all corners of the world shows that:

  • 82% rate Leuven positively as a place to live and work (compared to 69% in 2016)
  • 86% would recommend Leuven to friends and colleagues (compared to 72% in 2016)
  • 74% of users of IHL services indicate that these had a positive impact on their transition to Leuven
  • 98% would recommend IHL to others

Ten years of impact.

These positive results are no coincidence. Ten years ago, a first large-scale study showed that international knowledge workers needed more support when they started in Leuven. This insight led to the establishment of International House Leuven in 2017, an initiative of the city of Leuven, IMEC, KU Leuven, and Leuven MindGate. Since then, IHL has become the go-to place for people moving to Leuven from elsewhere. With practical support, social initiatives, and a warm welcome, IHL bridges the gap between newcomers and Leuven life.

"Leuven is big on knowledge and innovation, but small on connection and humanity. That's precisely what makes our city unique. I often hear people say: 'I came for an interesting job or studies, but I stayed for Leuven.' International House Leuven plays a key role in this. It ensures that people don't just feel like guests, but full-fledged fellow citizens who help shape our future"

Lalynn Wadera, Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs in Leuven

Connectedness and growth opportunities.

The study also highlights the challenges internationals still face: building a social network, language skills, (emotional) well-being, administration (including housing), and career opportunities. At the same time, they are increasingly finding ways to participate in Leuven life, through language courses, social events, or volunteering.

"I'm so glad I found IHL soon after arriving in Belgium. The events and information sessions were a great way to feel welcome and integrate easily. As an international who has lived in four different countries, I can say that the help and support you receive is irreplaceable. Now that I'm a volunteer at IHL myself, I can share that feeling with new internationals," says Georgi (Bulgaria).

A call to Leuven residents:

" This progress shows that IHL's efforts are working. And we're proud of that. But the report is also a heartfelt call to all Leuven residents: connect with your neighbors around the world, your colleagues, or hobbyists. A simple conversation, an invitation, or a shared activity can make a world of difference," concludes Alderman Wadera.
