Claim you Energy Subsidy (2023)
Did you know that the Flemish government agreed to offer subsidies for electricity, heating oil and gas? Normally all this is settled automatically (through allocation or deduction), but in certain situations you may have to act yourself in order to receive your compensation before it is too late.
Who needs to manually claim their subsidy?
The subsidy is provided automatically in most cases. If you rent an apartment which is heated by means of a collective gas installation*, then you need to apply for the subsidy yourself. The prerequisite is that you were registered in the apartment on September 30th, 2022. The first subsidy covers the months of November and December 2022 and is worth 270€ combined (135€ per month). Another subsidy will follow for the months January , February, and March 2023 equaling 405€ combined (again 135€ per month).
*Collective gas installation means that there is a collective gas boiler for several living units and the residents do not get a gas bill directly from the gas company.
How & until when can I apply?
The contract with the gas supplier is normally done in the name of the VME (association of co-owners) and is handled by the building manager. The building manager should have informed the owners/landlords and provided them with the information and details about how to proceed. If you did not get information from your landlord yet, you should ask, because you can claim the compensation only until 30th of April 2023 for subsidy 1 and 31st of July for Subsidy 2.
